UTCBLCBL ToolboxChallenge Up Tool

Challenge Up

A digital advice wizard for Challenge-based Learning course design

Challenge Up was developed to facilitate the transition towards Challenge-based Learning in higher education courses. The tool empowers users to self-assess the current and desired levels of CBL in their curriculum. This helps educators to visualise the gap between their current and desired CBL levels and set goals for improvement. Additionally, Challenge Up offers customised, practical advice to help bridge the gap between the levels. This advice is compiled of concrete steps, key reading materials, best practices, and relevant tools to ensure a seamless transition.

Introducing Challenge Up

Accessing Challenge Up

Challenge Up is accessible to everyone at challenge.utwente.nl

University of Twente users can log in with their SSO credentials, allowing them to start and manage multiple sessions simultaneously. This feature is useful for working on different courses or variations of the same course, with ongoing access to advice within each environment.

Non-logged-in users can start and complete a session, and their progress is maintained during that session. However, if they exit the page, their progress will not be saved, so they must download the advice before leaving.

CBL Implementation Continuum

Challenge Up is based on the CBL Implementation Continuum model developed by Imanbayeva, De Graaf, and Poortman (2023). The model connects CBL elements to Van den Akker’s Spider Web for curriculum design and describes a continuum of Mild, Moderate, and Intense CBL levels per each curricular component.

Celebrating Challenge UP

Challenge Up has already gained international recognition. We've received the Best Poster Award at the 1st National CBL Conference in Eindhoven. The tool has been recruited to feature in the ECIU CBL Handbook, the 1st CBL Symposium at the EdMedia Conference, the SEFI Editorial on Interdisciplinary Learning in Higher Engineering Education, and the ECIU Poster Session at the University of Twente.
