The Unpleasant Surprise Theater Rotterdam: Davy Pieters

A constant stream of images confronts us on a daily basis. The majority of which are images of violence.

Events in the lives of people usually unknown to us. We know that what we see has really happened, yet we are allowed to watch and look away.

How do we relate to the worlds on our screens? What are their effects on who we are? The Unpleasant Surprise looks for the connection in a visual and physical performance. Because with everything that we capture, something is lost as well.

About Davy Pieters

The performances directed by Davy Pieters (1988) are explorations of the human of the future and the way it is influenced by technical innovation and visual culture. The performances are characterised by her dominantly visual, physical and cinematic style.

Davy graduated in 2011 from the directors program of the Toneelacademie Maastricht. For her graduation project, she received the Henriette Hustinx-award. “She develops her projects on the intersection of theatre and performance with the courage to experiment”, the jury said about her work.

Davy produced several productions with Frascati between 2013 until 2016, among which are The Truth about KateHow did I die and Made in Here. She is also the founder of performance collective KOBE, together with Nastaran Razawi Khorasani.

The Truth about Kate was selected by the Dutch Theatre Festival and nominated for the BNG Nieuwe Theatermakersprijs. How did I die won the audience award at the Fast Forward Festival for Young Directors in Braunschweig (Germany) in 2016.
