The collaborating artists Hedy Hempe and Elsbeth Cochius of Natuurlijk Werk explore the artistic value and the survival power of nature and bring the nature inside. As a result the large exhibition room of Vrijhof Culture will change in a green laboratory during the exhibition period.
This exhibition of Natuurlijk Werk in the Vrijhof is going to be an CONTRAST. Contrasts are used to hold our attention. In a building the unruly natural form is strengthened and gives the material a different meaning. Nature in an unnatural environment.
At the end of 2016 they already started to prepare for this exhibition. In the surroundings of the University of Twente, they searched for special places and collected materials and made test setups. Once the season for cutting willow came, they started working with that material. Only when setting, the exhibition gets its final form.
About Natuurlijk Werk Hedy and Elsbeht write: "We started in September 2003 with a process in which nature is our inspiration. Every time is a different part of nature our workplace where we examine structures and systems and then create objects of natural materials gathered there in relation to the landscape. Working in nature has an important place in our lives. There’s an interaction between us and nature, but also a mutual interaction. Our sense of proportion of shape and color and the employment of primal techniques such as stacking and braiding, has become clear in recent years. But perhaps more importantly that working in nature makes us ‘complete’ people. At least, that’s how we experienced it. By the unbridled enthusiasm bubbling up within us each time - while doing it there’s this a kind of primal feeling mastering us - it seems like we thus unconsciously 'animate' our objects this way. "
The opening in the presence of the exhibitors will take place on Thursday 20 April, 16:30 hrs.
NB Due to King's day, the Batavierenrace, Liberation Day and Ascension Day the exhibition can’t be visited on April 27 – 1 May and 5 and 25 May.
