In 2017 Sandor Löwik received the first Brinksma Innovation Grant. His proposal is about threshold concepts and decoding the disciplines. An exciting approach to the enhancement of higher education, teaching and learning. The key idea of threshold concepts is that certain crucial concepts, like imaginary numbers in math and engineering or analytical skills, can be very hard for students to learn. Sandor asked himself why students were not capable to do what seems so obvious to teachers, when it comes to academic skills. His purpose is to break down some academic skills’ threshold concepts through decoding the principles and develop, implement and test learning programs. This should result in a plan of approach and working principles that teachers in all UT programs can use.
