Welcome to edfest
In the first two weeks of March, the BMS Teaching Academy organises EdFest – the BMS Educational Innovations Festival. These weeks will put the spotlight on inspiring WSV Innovation Projects, SUTQ projects, and highlights themes that colour the educational landscape of today and tomorrow. Educational innovations should not stay in the background, with this festival we bring them to the forefront and allow for broader implementation.

Tuesday 1st of March

Anna Bos-Nehles and Sebastian Piest will present the UTeaching Cases, cases related to industry 4.0 to be used by lecturers in their education. Students often work together for courses, allowing them to learn from each other and build on each other’s knowledge. Here, feedback is key to achieving this growth. Anna Bos-Nehles and Pantelis Papadopoulos will present their respective projects on “optimal feedback” and “self-assessment and group awareness”, diving into the different facets of feedback and groupwork, and how students can learn both from a lecturer, but also from each other. - Klaas Stek – soft skills and impact of teaching CBL
Challenge Based Learning is a hot topic in educational developments right now, showing lots of potential for implementation also within BMS. Students can collaborate to solve “wicked challenges”, and structure their learning process around that. In this session, Frank van den Berg will provide a theoretical background on CBL, and Guus Dix and Klaas Stek will present projects that are in the CBL realm; Guus will present his crossing2communities minor, a CBL minor focussed on local challenges. This festival puts the spotlight on several lecturers, to highlight and appreciate their achievements with their projects. This is an example of recognising and rewarding, but far from the only example. Jennifer Herek and Jeroen Jansen from the SEG Individuals and Teams, will host a session on this topic. - Devrim Yazan – serious game circular economy
- Henk van der Kolk – data visualisation
The use of technologies and data in education provides ample possibilities for new learning methods, increased engagement, and fun experimentation. Three colleagues will present their projects on this theme. Martin Schmettow will introduce an easy eye-tracking software and set-up, that students themselves can easily build and use in their courses. Devrim Yazan developed a serious game about Circular Economy, merging the method of gamification with the interesting topic of sustainability. Henk van der Kolk will present an app that was developed to help students with data visualisation. With a big number of graphing and visualising options, this app can help students find their way. How do different stakeholders look at a technology? Klaasjan Visscher will present his method of Theatrical Technology Assessment, in which the audience will actively participate in a roleplay to assess a certain technology. How to create and use micro-lectures and other educational videos with added value for students?

Students react positively to micro-lectures used in our education. More options are available, like animated instruction videos, and the UT has great facilities and support for creating those learning facilities.
In this activity, we like to give you an impression of opportunities, experiences and challenges that go together with developing and integrating educational videos in your education. Moreover, you get information on available facilities.
Matthias de Visser and Martin Stienstra participants of the series of 4 workshops on Enhanced learning by Digitalization will share their experiences with the facilities and process of the development of different types of educational videos and their use in education.
They were coached and supported by the BMS e-learning specialist Sten Roemaat, who facilitates development of educational videos as well as their use in educational activities.
A new round of Enhanced learning by digitalization will start soon and this activity will give you a preview of what to expect.
