The project focuses on the role of intermediary organizations, in particular research funding organizations, in the development of emerging new fields of research such a nanotechnology. This is a comparative study that comprises issues of facility funding, coping with interdisciplinary research by disciplinary funding structures, and the relation between nanotechnology and industry. A broad comparative inventory of particular countries’ national organization of research funding and their funding activities related to nanotechnology was done in 2006. The countries included were Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. In 2007 interviews were taken in Norway, Finland, The Netherlands and Switzerland for further in depth study. Each of these countries showed interesting characteristics and activities in view of the issues mentioned above.
