How to get valid results? The importance of research design and methodology in empirical social research.
by Adrie Dassen CHEPS
In this session, general methodological considerations (problems and potential solutions) regarding the design and conduct of empirical social research are outlined. The session will focus on four different types of validity (construct validity, internal validity, external validity, and statistical conclusion validity) and aims to raise participants’ awareness of the importance of the research design, data collection methodology, and analytical methodology for such issues. The session will take (quasi)experimental research designs as its point of departure, but will illustrate that the four different types of validity should be safeguarded in all research, regardless of the chosen design and methodology.
