While psychologist and university lecturer Femke Nijboer already dissected the body in her previous book, she goes one step further in this new book, working title "I Want to Be a Whale," and writes about death itself. Because we all die at some point, whether we want to or not. Our bodies are transient, mortal. How do we cope with this? How does Femke cope?
A relevant topic for all of us, as we are aging rapidly and healthcare is becoming congested. Can we learn to accept mortality? This time, she embarks on a road trip to investigate.
For this book, she has received a grant from the Lira Fund, for which she is grateful. The committee commented on her proposal: "How do you make death a topic of conversation without it becoming overwhelming?" Psychologist Femke Nijboer (University of Twente) chooses humor and takes the reader on a road trip along the edges of life. "I Want to Be a Whale" promises to be a moving yet joyful book about transience and loss. The committee was drawn by its playful tone and intriguing chapter titles.
