The Twente Health School will take place on from Monday 18 May to Wednesday 20 May 2026 (3 days). On Thursday 21 May 2026 we offer a optional excursion day.

Which group is the Twente Health School intended for?

The Twente Health School is intended for PhD students, master students and early-career researchers.

What is the Twente Health School?

The Twente Health School is a three-day Spring School at the University of Twente that brings together PhD students, master students, and early-career researchers to explore how health, data and technology shape the future of care through lectures, workshops, lab visits, and real-world collaboration. 

What does the programme look like?

The programme unfolds over three themed days:

  • Day 1 – Technology Shaping Health & Society: explore major challenges, real-world use cases, and the broader impact of health technology.
  • Day 2 – New Frontiers in Data, AI & Health: dive into hands-on workshops, case studies, and emerging data-driven methods.
  • Day 3 – Evaluation, Systems & Responsible Practice: focus on human factors, system design, and the ethics of responsible AI and healthcare innovation.

An optional fourth day includes a visit to Amsterdam, where participants can explore cultural highlights in one of Europe’s most vibrant cities.

How is the Twente Health School connected to the BMS Health research theme?

The Twente Health School is organised by the Health research theme of the Faculty of Behavioural, Management and Social Sciences (BMS) at the University of Twente. The event reflects the theme’s mission to advance human-centred, data-driven, and responsible innovations for better health and wellbeing. By bringing together researchers, clinicians, and industry partners, The Twente Health School showcases how interdisciplinary collaboration can shape the future of healthcare.

Do I need to participate in social activities?

No, social activities are optional. However, we believe they are a great opportunity to get to know your fellow participants better.

The main three-day programme includes several informal networking moments, and participants can also choose to join an optional fourth day in Amsterdam focused on cultural activities and exploring the city together.

Will I receive credits and a certificate?
  • Participants can get a maximum of 1,5 European Credit (ECTS). We would like to point out that recognition of credits is at the discretion of your home institution.
  • On the last day of the original 3-day programme, you will receive a certificate.
How can I indicate special needs (dietary, accessibility, ...)?

We will do everything we can to offer you the best possible experience!

If you have specific accessibility or dietary needs, you can indicate them during the registration process. If any needs arise after registration, please contact us directly — we’ll be happy to find the best solution together.

Admission and registration

What are the admission criteria?

To ensure a high-quality and collaborative learning experience, participation in the Twente Health School is open to candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • PhD students, master students, and early-career researchers (up to 5 years after PhD) from universities or research institutes.
  • Applicants should have an academic or professional interest in the intersection of health, technology, and data.
  • The programme is conducted in English, so a good command of English (spoken and written) is required.
Are there any participation requirements?

We expect that you join the Twente Health School from start to finish, so that all participants can benefit from the full experience.

By completing the entire programme, you can obtain a maximum of 1,5 European Credit (ECTS). Please note that recognition of credits is at the discretion of your home institution.

Do our universities need to have an exchange agreement for me to participate in the Twente Health School?

No, PhD's and early-career researchers from both partner and non-partner universities may apply.

Visa and insurance

Do I need a visa?

Depending on your country of origin, you may need a visa to attend. Please check the Dutch visa regulations on the immigration authority’s website, or contact the embassy or consulate of the Netherlands for specific information that applies to your situation.

We recommend starting the visa application process well in advance of the Twente Health School, as processing times, required documents, and procedures may vary.

Entry visa application

To apply for a visa, use the checklist provided by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

May I receive an invitation letter?

You may receive an invitation letter after successful registration.

Please send an email with your request to twente-health-school@utwente.nl.

I have not been granted a visa. What to do?

Obtaining an appropriate visa is the personal responsibility of the candidate. If a visa is necessary for you to travel to the Netherlands, it is unfortunately not possible to join the Twente Health School. Go to General Terms & Conditions to read more about the cancellation policy.

Do I need insurance?

The Twente Health School does not provide any insurance. Please make sure you arrange your own travel insurance for your stay in the Netherlands.

Your insurance should cover medical costs, liability, accidents, and repatriation to your home country in case of emergencies. We also recommend taking out a short-term cancellation insurance.

Programme fee

Claim your discount

When three (prospective) participants from the same institution register for the Twente Health School, the thirth participant from the same institution will receive a 50% discount code for their registration.

To receive the discount code, the group must contact us via twente-health-school@utwente.nl after the first two participants have registered and before the thirth participant completes their registration. Once verified, the thirth participant will receive the discount code by email.

The discount code is personal and non-transferable. Any misuse or mismatch between the nominated name and the registration details will result in cancellation.
Each discount code may be used only once.

If tickets are sold out, the discount code cannot be used. The thirth participant may instead join the waiting list (see clause 2). The discount code is valid until 1 April 2026. After this date, registration for the Twente Health School closes.

How much is the programme fee and what is included?

The programme fee for the Twente Health School is:

  • €300 for PhD candidates or early-career researchers employed at the University of Twente
  • €600 for participants from other universities or institutes

The fee includes:

  • Full access to all sessions, workshops, and activities during the three programme days
  • Coffee breaks and lunches
  • Social and networking activities
  • Conference materials
  • A certificate of participation (worth up to 1.5 ECTS; recognition depends on your home institution)
  • An optional fourth day in Amsterdam
What is not included in the programme fee?

Additional costs you may incur (including but not limited to):

  • Flights or train travel
  • Accommodation and local tourist taxes
  • Breakfast
  • Travel insurance (participants must arrange their own insurance)
  • Additional sightseeing or excursions
  • Visa-related expenses, such as document translation
  • Personal expenses: pocket money, test fees, phone calls, transportation between locations (unless it's included in the programme), purchase of supplies or books, visits to nearby attractions, personal care items, etc.

Please note that the Twente Health School does not arrange or cover any of these additional costs.

travel and accomodation

Public transport in the Twente region

Sometimes you will need to travel independently — for example, to reach the day’s starting point, return to your accommodation, or explore during your free time. Here are the best options:

  • Arriva Bus: Regular buses run between the University of Twente campus and the city centres of Enschede and Hengelo. Plan your trip using the 9292 App. You can check in and out using your debit card, credit card, or mobile phone (NFC).
  • Bicycle: The Netherlands is famous for its excellent cycling infrastructure. Renting a bicycle for your stay is highly recommended. Please make sure to familiarise yourself with Dutch traffic rules.
  • Taxis: Local taxi services in Enschede include DiTaxi and TaxiMaxx.
  • Uber: Uber is also available as an alternative for quick and flexible travel.
Where do I arrange accommodation?
U-Park Hotel

Located at the University of Twente's campus, walking distance from the conference activities.

Fletcher Hotel-Restaurant De Broeierd-Enschede

The Fletcher Hotel-Restaurant De Broeierd-Enschede is located across the street of the University of Twente. It is a walking distance away from the conference activities.

Little Monkey Hostel

Little Monkey is Enschede's first and only hostel, perfectly situated in the heart of the city.

Intercity Hotel

The Intercity Hotel is located in the city centre, nearby the train station. 

There are alternative options for accomodation, such as hostels, guest houses or bed and breakfast, or appartments and studios. To find the best suited one for your needs, we suggest checking the options on Booking.com.

How to travel from the airport to Twente?

The University of Twente is well connected and reachable by public transport. Below you can find examples of routes you can take from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Eindhoven Airport to the University of Twente.

If you are planning to use public transport during your travel, we advise you to check the trip planner of the dutch railway company. There you can find the most up to date information, plan your trip and buy tickets. 

Landing in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

The train station Schiphol Airport is located directly beneath the airport itself. From there, you can take a direct train to Hengelo or Enschede.

If you travel via Hengelo, you can get off the train at Hengelo Station and take bus number 9 from the bus station next to the train station to Kennispark/UT. This bus stop is located right in front of the University of Twente campus.

Alternatively, you can continue to Enschede and take bus number 1 from the bus station in front of the train station. Bus 1 passes directly through the University of Twente campus.

The total travel time is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, and the one-way cost is around €30.

Landing at Eindhoven Airport

From Eindhoven Airport, you can take bus number 400 to Eindhoven Centraal station. From there, take the train in the direction of Amsterdam Muiderpoort and travel until Utrecht Centraal. This train ride takes about 1 hour.

From Utrecht Centraal, take the train to Enschede Centraal.
If you prefer, you may get off earlier at Hengelo and take bus number 9 from the bus station next to the train station to Kennispark/UT. This bus stop is located directly in front of the University of Twente campus.

Alternatively, you can continue by train to Enschede Centraal. In front of the station is the Station bus station, where you can take bus number 1 to the University of Twente campus. Bus 1 passes directly through the campus.

The total journey takes approximately 3 hours and 10 minutes, and a one-way trip costs around €30.

During your trip

🆘 What should I do in case of emergency?

Your safety is our priority. In case of an emergency during your stay or while attending the Twente Health School, please follow these steps:

1. Call the Dutch emergency number: 112

For all life-threatening emergencies (ambulance, fire brigade, police).

2. Need the police, but it’s not an emergency?

Call the Dutch non-emergency police line: 0900-8844
For reporting theft, missing items, or situations requiring police assistance that are not urgent.

3. If you are on the University of Twente campus

They respond quickly, coordinate with emergency services, and provide on-site support.

4. For medical issues that are not urgent

5. If anything happens during the event

Inform a member of the organising team immediately — we’re here to help.

6. Safety on campus

• Follow instructions from UT staff or emergency responders.
• Evacuation routes and assembly points are clearly marked.

Where can I go when I have questions during the Twente Health School?

There will be several members of the Twente Health School crew present throughout the programme. You can recognise them by their clothing and badges.
