The symposium will be held in the Ravelijn building (room 1501), on November 29th 8:30-18:00. Its target group is the researchers who conduct healthcare related work and are interested in applying data science in their research. The symposium is composed of two parts: morning will be dedicated to talks on data science and its impactful applications in healthcare, and afternoon will be dedicated to a hands-on workshop ( with priority given to BMS researchers). The capacity for the morning session is 90 people, and for the afternoon session 30 people.

Registration

You can register here. Please note that timely registration is encouraged due to limited capacity. Please see the tentative program below.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU CAN ONLY REGISTER FOR THE MORNING SESSION AND LUNCH, AFTERNOON SESSION IS NOW FULL. If there are any last minute cancellations, those will be announced in the morning of the symposium.

INVITED SPEAKERS

Bernard P. Veldkamp

Bernard studied Applied Mathematics and did his PhD at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Twente. After his PhD, he became assistant professor. In 2005, he spent a few months as visiting professor at University of Bologna, Italy, and in 2007, he spend half a year at ETS, Princeton. In 2007, he became associate professor. From 2008-2018, he was director of the Research Center for Examination and Certification. In 2011/2012, Bernard spend a year at Law School Admission Council, PA, USA. He became heead of department in 2015 and got his appointment as full professor in 2017.

His research interests include measurement optimization and behavioral data science. In his research, he focuses on Computer-based and computerized adaptive testing, Text mining and Machine learning in both education and health. Current projects are about dealing with uncertainty in the data and the applications of text mining and machine learning in mental health and hospital settings.

Karin Groothuis-Oudshoorn

Karin Groothuis-Oudshoorn, PhD, is an Assistant Professor and Biostatistician at University of Twente, the Netherlands. Dr. Groothuis-Oudshoorn completed her PhD at the University of Utrecht, specializing in mathematical statistics. After that she worked at several applied research institutes as a (bio)statistician. In 2009, she joined the department of Health Technology and Services Research at the University of Twente where her research focus is on design and statistical analysis of preferences and the application of statistical learning techniques in health science. She teaches courses on data science, statistical learning and medical statistics for several educational programs at the University of Twente.

Tim  Paauw

In 2015, Tim was the first to finish the newly formed Business Analytics master at UTwente. After graduation he started working at data science startup Ynformed, a consultancy that focusses on applying data science to make societal impact. Back then there was only a hand full of people, but currently we work with 30+ colleagues and have recently been acquired by RoyalHaskoningDHV. Apart from helping the company grow, Tim has been involved mainly in healthcare projects over the past years: ranging from predicting child abuse for GGD to finding the right medication for psychiatric patients, or spotting tumors on brain MRI’s.

Job van der Palen

Professor Dr Job van der Palen works as research coordinator in Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) hospital in Enschede - one of the largest teaching hospitals in the Netherlands - and is part-time professor at the department of OMD at the faculty BMS at the University of Twente. Prof Van der Palen’s research focuses mainly on lung disease, including lung cancer, and he works closely with the departments of Pulmonary Medicine, Clinical Pharmacy, and Medical Microbiology. Van der Palen is a clinical epidemiologist and has been involved in numerous projects, many of which have been funded by the Netherlands Lung Foundation, as well as the EU (including Euregio projects). He has published > 250 peer-reviewed articles.

Sharina Kort

Sharina Kort is a second year resident pulmonology in Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) hospital in Enschede. Next to this clinical work, she is a PhD candidate at the University of Twente where she focuses on “The detection of lung cancer in exhaled breath by electronic nose technology”. This research has started in 2016 and has recently finished its training phase in a multi-centre setting including 4 Dutch hospitals. The validation phase has already been started.
