Olga is an Assistant Professor at the Center for eHealth Research and Disease Management, department of Psychology Health & Technology (PHT). Her main fields of expertise lie in user centred design and persuasive eHealth technologies. Olga’s current research focuses on design, evaluation and implementation of personalized eHealth technology to enhance healthy lifestyle of adolescents (sexual health, obesity) and self-management of chronic patients (COPD, diabetes) by applying social media, mHealth and serious gaming technologies. She works together with Prof. Dr. Lisette van Gemert-Pijnen (UT) and Dr. Silke David at the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM).
Olga has over nine years of academic as well as industrial experience and multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of user centred design (UCD), information visualization, awareness applications and Computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW). She coordinated complex interaction design projects in various domains, such as life sciences, healthcare, education and software engineering. Human-computer interaction (HCI) skills: user profiling (focus groups, task analysis, interviewing, cultural probes, personas), ethnography, video prototyping (scenarios, storyboarding), participatory design, usability evaluation (thinking aloud, focus groups, co-discovery etc.), large display design (situational awareness, peripheral displays).
Olga successfully defended her PhD thesis “Do you know what I know? Situational awareness of co-located teams in multidisplay environments” in 2010 at the Human Media Interaction Group, University of Twente. Her doctoral research focused on the human-computer interaction, decision making support and situational awareness of co-located teams in smart multi-display environments. Olga collaborated with various research institutes and partners of Bsik project BioRange: Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre (NBIC), MicroArray Department/ Integrative Bioinformatics Unit, University of Amsterdam, Microsoft Research Redmond, T-Xchange (Thales NL Research), and the Free University Amsterdam (VU).
Olga’s current research scope within persuasive health technology is dedicated mainly to participatory design, prototyping (applied research) and user evaluation methods (fundamental research):
- Situational awareness measures and visualization support (user inteface design). Applications examples: personalized public eHealth services for lifestyle support and self-management.
- Group dynamics & decision making support. Applications example: peripheral visualizations and serious gaming apps; incorporating social aspects in persuasive design to enhance self-management in chronic care.
Olga is involved in supervision of bachelor, master and PhD students, coordination of research projects and submitting new research proposals to acquire funding (National and EU: INTERREG, Horizon2020).
Olga is reviewer for various international conferences and international journals (JMIR, Health Policy & Technology). She was invited editor for a special issue of LNCS Tutorial Human-Centered Visualization Environments, invited program committee member for eTelemed conference (eTelemed 2014 & eTelemed 2015), organiser of NSRII 2014, en co-organiser of eHealth Workshops at ICBM 2014 and Persuasive 2015.
Sense eHealth project (UT-RIVM)
Supporting healthy lifestyle of adolescents and persuasive and personalized eHealth services, social media and serious gaming applications. The goal of the Sense eHealth project is to design, evaluate and implement of national network of eHealth services that provide personalized and more (cost)-effective care according to the special needs of high-risk adolescents. The overall aim is to contribute to the healthy lifestyle, self-management and to prevent the sexually transmitted infections.
The project is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) under grant 2012/2 and is carried out in collaboration with the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM) [http://www.rivm.nl/English].
