In august 2011 I completed the Master Health Psychology at the University of Twente. The subject of my masterthesis was the evaluation of the online intervention “Living to the full” which is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and mindfulness for people with mild to medium mental symptoms but without psychopathology. After my graduation I worked as a student assistant at the University of Amsterdam.

In February 2012 I started my PhD-project at the University of Twente at the department Psychology, Health & Technology. Within this department, my focus is mainly on:

  • Positive psychology and technology
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness and self-compassion
  • eHealth: the use of Information & Communication Technology to improve healthcare
  • Co-creation: the involvement of end-users in every stage of the development, design and testing of an intervention
  • Partners of cancer patients/ informal caregivers

Research projects

During the first two years of my PhD-project I developed ‘Hold on, for each other’ – a web-based self-help intervention for partners of cancer patients ( This intervention is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Partners of cancer patients were actively involved during the development process, thus their needs and wishes form the basis of ‘Hold on, for each other’. This intervention offers information and support.

Because ‘Hold on, for each other’ is a new intervention, we have started a national study in February 2014. Aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Furthermore, were want to investigate two different kinds of support: personal support (feedback on a weekly basis provided by a counsellor) versus automatic support (feedback immediately after completing an exercise). Cost-effectiveness and long-term effects will also be tested.

The project will be conducted in collaboration between Twente University, Free University Medical Centre, Free University and Rijks University Groningen. Supervisors in the study are dr. C.H.C Drossaert (daily tutor), prof. dr. E.T. Bohlmeijer (first promotor) and prof. dr. I.M Verdonck- de Leeuw (second promotor).
