My areas of interest cover criminal, legal, and investigative psychology. These areas aim to understand the psychology of crime prevention (e.g. What markers precede violence?), criminal investigations (e.g. How to interview suspects and witnesses), and legal decision-making (e.g. How do judges evaluate evidence?). My field of expertise is threat assessment and management—a field concerned with persons who are believed to pose a threat of violence (e.g. potential terrorists, school shooters, stalkers of public figures). Is it possible to foresee planned acts of violence? And what can be done to intervene?
I obtained my PhD within the House of Legal psychology (www.legalpsychology.eu). From 2009-2014, I served as a criminal investigator with the Dutch Police (Landelijke Recherche). I am currently a board member of the Association of European Threat Assessment Professionals (AETAP).
