Irna van der Molen (1969) is coordinator of the Centre for Risk management, Safety and Security at the University of Twente. She is interested in risk management, safety and security at regional, national and international level. She holds an MA degree in Public Administration, an MSc in Risk Management (Cum Laude), and a PhD in Water Resource management.
Prior to her current position, between 1993 and 1996, she worked for IDEM Consult on Institutional Development and Environmental Management. From 1996-1997, she worked for Geoplan International, Amsterdam. As such, she participated in studies for clients, such as the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment; the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment; and the ‘Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit’ (GTZ, Germany). In 1997, she joined the Technology and Sustainable Development Group as PhD candidate and in 2001 her position at the University of Twente changed to Assistant Professor.
She conducted research in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the USA and paid visits to India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Palestinian Territories, Israel, Egypt and Lebanon, and has been responsible as project leader for several international projects in the Middle-East. In 2006, she completed the ‘Training of Experts in Rapid Assistance and Co-operation for Conflict Prevention Operations, Crisis Management and Post-Conflict Rehabilitation’ (REACT), in Madrid, Spain. The training was organized by Helsinki España, in collaboration with ICRC; the Spanish Red Cross; The Ministry of Defence (Spain); the Ministry of the Interior (Spain); NATO; the United Nations; the Organization for Cooperation and Security in Europe (OSCE); the European Union; United States Institute of Peace (USIP); Peace Operations Training Institute; and other organizations.
Between 2008 and 2011 she participated in the Dutch Knowledge Network on Peace, Security and Development. She organized and facilitated workshops on social harmony, conflict management, mediation, negotiation, and diplomacy; both in the Netherlands and abroad. She regularly combines her work at the University of Twente with other universities or organizations. For example, between 2007 and 2011, she has worked closely together with the Centre for Conflict Studies, University of Utrecht. Between September 2012 and December 2014, she worked as Assistant Professor in Water management, Security and Governance for the Maastricht School of Management (1 day/week) in addition to her position at the University of Twente.
At present, she combines her work as Coordinator for the Centre for Risk Management, Safety and Security with a position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Administration (both University of Twente) and as UT-liaison at Twente Safety & Security, under the umbrella of the Twente Safety Region. She is member of the Advisory Committee to the Hague Security Delta, Member of the Steering Group for the 20Creathon Events; Moderator of the Working Group ‘Drone Society’ within the Foundation for Responsible Robotics; Chair of the Focus Area ‘Social Innovation’ of the National Innovation Agenda Safety and Security (NIAS), and Member of Steering Group National Safety at Work Platform.
