Nico P. Mol (1947) is a student of the University of Twente since 1979, from 1998 to 2012 as a professor of public financial management. From 1990 to 2004 he fulfilled the same position at the Royal Military Academy. From 2010 to 2013 he was a member of the municipal council of the city of Enschede and from this position he has been specializing in his subsequent research in local government budgeting and finance.
Present research concerns the history of budgetary decision making in Dutch local government, specifically since Thorbecke’s essay on local government budgetary law published in 1847. This research aims at a further development of the ideas expressed in Mol’s retirement address in 2012 on the power of the purse of municipal councils.
