EMERITUS PROFESSORS

Prof.dr. J.J.A. Thomassen (Jacques)

Emeritus Professor of Political Science

Jacques Thomassen (1945) is Emeritus Professor of Political Science. After having worked at our university for more than three decades, he retired in 2010. He has published extensively on topics such as political representation, voting behaviour, and legitimacy in the European Union.

In 1976, Thomassen received his doctorate in the social sciences from the Catholic University of Tilburg, as it was then known (dissertation: Kiezers en gekozenen in een representatieve demokratie). He was appointed professor of political science at the University of Twente in 1977. He was a visiting scholar at the universities of Michigan, Harvard, and Mannheim, the European University Institute, and the Australian National University. He was twice a fellow in residence at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (NIAS). Thomassen held leading positions in several national and international research programmes, including as a founding member and the first chair of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES). He also served as General Secretary of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), of which he remains a member.

Thomassen has received several forms of special recognition for his academic achievements, including a royal distinction in 2002, appointment as a distinguished professor (universiteitshoogleraar) in 2005, and an honorary medal from the university upon his retirement five years later. In 2018, he became an honorary member of the Dutch Political Science Association (NKWP), joining only three previous recipients, including Andries Hoogerwerf, to have received this recognition for their exceptional academic contributions.
