Investing in what works key to effective cybersecurity

UT researcher Jan-Willem Bullee, ambassador of the Centre for Security and Digitalisation (CVD), advocates in a recent interview for a more evidence-based approach to cybersecurity and for breaking down silos between disciplines.

Bullee’s work focuses on making cybercrime, cybersecurity and online fraud measurable, with the aim of reducing the number of victims. From a behavioural science perspective, he studies how interventions such as training, campaigns and serious games contribute to safer online behaviour. Key questions are: what works, for whom, and for how long?

According to Bullee, while there is a lot of activity in cybersecurity, learning remains fragmented. Knowledge and experiences are not sufficiently shared, leading organisations to reinvent the wheel. He stresses the need for a strong foundation with shared goals, clear metrics and space to also learn from ineffective interventions.

Real progress, he argues, requires collaboration across disciplines. When technical, behavioural and data-driven perspectives come together, solutions emerge that truly make an impact.
