MEEM master's programme to be an initial course

The UT has received a positive Ministerial Decree on macro-efficiency for the Master’s in Environmental and Energy Management (MEEM). The CSTM (Department of Governance and Technology for Sustainability) at the UT ran the MEEM educational programme in Friesland in the 2015-2016 academic year for the 17th time. The course, still a non-funded master's programme, has so far trained more than 300 international students representing more than 40 different nationalities from all over the world.

The MEEM educational programme is an international, one-year, social scientific environment course given in the English language. A multidisciplinary course, it has a social scientific approach (management and governance) and technological context, which focus on the specialisations of environmental-, energy- and water management. These specialisations unite MEEM with regional priorities such as those noted in the Kennisagenda Fryslân [Friesland Knowledge Agenda].

Great demand for MEEM

Partly due to a request by the province of Friesland, the UT has initiated the switch to a funded programme. The greatest advantage of this is the increased accessibility of the programme for Dutch and other European students. The pilot, in which scholarships awarded to Dutch students were included, showed great demand for the MEEM programme by Dutch students, and their appreciation of its added value. On 24 June, the UT and twelve other knowledge institutions and two regional authorities signed the Friesland Higher Education Agreement (HOAF) to stimulate the growth of master's programmes and PhD studies in Friesland. By supplying a funded MEEM, the UT also contributes to this Agreement.

An accreditation transfer will be applied for, as the MEEM is already NVAO accredited [Accreditation Organisation of The Netherlands and Flanders]. The MEEM programme will be open for enrolments after its registration in the Central Register of Higher Education Study Programmes (CROHO). Completion is expected by the autumn of 2016.
