Making Provincial History Accessible – Resolutions of Overijssel

Summary

While archival institutions have made significant efforts to digitize their collections, they often remain in the form of images, which are not searchable and are not very accessible to general audiences. The goal of this Postdoctoral project is to make the Resolutions of the States of Overijssel (1578-1795) accessible to a broader audience. This means leveraging the layout, making the text readable through automatic text recognition, labelling people and places, and adding additional metadata (keywords) to gain easier access to these approximately 60,000 pages of political-institutional texts. Moreover, abstracts of requests (petitions) are included in these political deliberations, providing new insights into the political engagement and how day-to-day affairs were experienced by the inhabitants of Overijssel. Key partner of this project is the Collectie Overijssel (Zwolle) and their volunteers that help with the tagging of entities.
