Leveraging Nineteenth-Century Archival Logic for Keyword Search

Summary

While archival institutions all over the world have made great efforts to digitize their collections, they mostly remain in the form of images, which are not searchable and not very accessible to a general audience The goal of this PhD project is to utilize the historical navigational logic embedded in archival structures to make archives accessible in an inexpensive and computationally lightweight way. At the same time, this projects quantifies and qualifies how this affects records of marginalized groups in particular in the context of nineteenth century Dutch (colonial) government archives. Key partners of this project are the National Archive in the Hague and the Humanities Cluster (HuC) of the KNAW.
