Sofie Berghuis finished her bachelor in Health Sciences in 2014 at the University of Twente. In 2015 she obtained her master in Health Sciences Cum Laude (track Health Technology Assessment and Innovation). Her final research project was on the health economic impact of circulating tumor cells in early stage breast cancer. After graduation Sofie started working as a junior researcher at the department of Health Technology and Services research. In March 2016 she started her PhD on blood based biomarkers in breast cancer.
The main subject of Sofie her research project is blood based biomarkers in breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer among women. Although progress in diagnostics and treatment advances have been made, the metastatic disease still largely is an incurable condition. To reduce the development of distant metastases, and to treat these best, it is important to detect the metastases and start personalized treatment as early as possible. Currently that is done by using several imaging techniques or combinations of those. Unfortunately these imaging techniques are not able to detect micro metastases or characterize these micro metastases. A possible solution for enabling earlier detection and characterization of possible metastases is the use of liquid biopsies, to detect, for example free circulating DNA, microRNA or circulating tumor cells. The aim of this project is to summarize the state of technology of all currently existing blood based biomarkers and to value these based on their probable impact for future health care.
