Maarten IJzerman to lead World-Class Cancer Research Program in Melbourne

Only recently it was announced that Maarten IJzerman, Professor of Health Technology & Services, has accepted a new position at the University of Melbourne and the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Center (VCCC) in Melbourne, Australia.

He will take up the appointment as Chair Cancer Health Services Research at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences with effect from May 2018. This appointment is part of the VCCC’s Leaders in Cancer Strategy.  

Maarten IJzerman will lead the development and consolidation of a data-driven Cancer Health Services Research programme within the VCCC. The main thrust of this programme is to develop analytical tools to translate scientific and technological breakthroughs into cancer care. To quote the University of Melbourne’s press release: “While we live in a world of convergent technologies, specialists like Professor IJzerman are needed to make sense of the data and apply it to practice”. This appointment also involves co-chairing the Melbourne Genomic Health Alliance’s (MGHA) “data-driven analytic capabilities” steering committee.  

VCCC/UoM/Western Health

The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Center was established in 2009, with reference to the US comprehensive cancer centres aiming to support translational cancer research. It is a unique combination of ten world-leading clinical and research institutes in Melbourne, including the University of Melbourne, Western Health, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Center, and the Walter and Eliza Hall medical research institute.

University of Twente

In addition to his appointment in Melbourne, Maarten IJzerman will hold a partial appointment in Twente, with a main responsibility as a supervisor for his PhD students at Health Technology and Services Research (HTSR) and as a principal investigator of international programs such as UCAN-CANDU. In his new role, Maarten will facilitate and establish a support the development of an international exchange program, in particular between the University of Melbourne and the University of Twente.

About Maarten IJzerman

Maarten IJzerman trained as a biomedical scientist, graduated from Radboud University Nijmegen in 1993 and obtained his PhD in Twente in 1997. Following his PhD, he was appointed Scientific Director of Roessingh Research and Development, responsible for strengthening the academic position of rehabilitation research. After returning to this University as a professor, in 2007, he founded and expanded the Health Technology & Services Research department (Faculty BMS). Since then, he has had several leaderships roles in the University, including the Director of Studies for Health Sciences (2007-2012), interim Scientific Director of the MIRA Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine in 2013/2014 and Vice-Dean of Health & Biomedical Technology at the Faculty of Science and Technology (2015/2017). In addition to his appointment at the University of Twente, Maarten IJzerman holds numerous international scientific advisory positions and is a member of the Supervisory Board of the Radiotherapiegroep (Arnhem/Deventer) and of the Máxima Medical Center (Veldhoven), a tertiary clinical care hospital.
