Sandra Gijzen studied Medicine at the University of Groningen. After her graduation in 2000 she started to work as an emergency physician for one year at Medical Spectrum Twente in Enschede. From 2001 to present she is working as a Preventive Child Health Care physician at the Municipal Health Service (GGD) Twente, where her focus is on children with intellectual disabilities, developmental issues and behavior problems, and child abuse. Since April 2016 she is also a member of Team Jeugd en Gezin (Team Youth and Family) in Hengelo. Next to her work as a Preventive Child Health Care physician she has practiced forensic medicine at the Municipal Health Service Twente during the period 2002 until 2006. Since 2012 she is also secretary of the VVC (Vergader Voorbereidings Commissie) of the AJN (Artsen Jeugdezondheidszorg Nederland). The VVC organizes scientific meetings 3 times a year for youth health care physicians. The topics of these meetings are current and relevant.
Because of her interest in research she started as a PhD candidate at The Institute for Innovation and Governance Studies of the University of Twente since 2010. Her PhD project is called “A feasibility study on the implementation of Child Death Review in the Netherlands”, which is part of a cross-border project Germany-the Netherlands. Child Death Review is a method in which all child deaths are examined in a systematic way through a multidisciplinary approach with the objective to improve ‘cause of death’ statistics, identify risk factors for generating preventive interventions and enhance support of families and professionals. In this PhD project the University of Twente collaborates with the University of Münster and TNO Child Health. It is financially supported by INTERREG Deutschland-Nederland, as the leading financer, and The Ministry for Youth and Families, Land NRW, Land Niedersachsen, University of Twente, University of Münster, TNO Child Health, Menzis Health Insurance, MKB Netherlands, Foundation ‘Kinderpostzegels’ Netherlands, Kassenärzliche Vereinigung NRW, and Lionsclub Hamaland.
Her interests include forensic medicine, child mortality and prevention
