Dr. Marjan Hummel is an Assistant Professor in DEcision support for Design Engineering (DEciDE) in Healthcare. She is affiliated with the Department of Health Technology and Services Research at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. She has developed a line of research on health technology assessment (HTA) of medical devices in their early stages of development. Within this field of early HTA, she is an acknowledged expert on Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). In her MCDA studies, she chaired and supervised various expert panels, composed of biomedical engineers and medical specialists, to assess technologies prior to their clinical introduction in health care. Examples of the medical devices she assessed include gene technology, nanotechnology, imaging technology, heart pumps, and robotics. Her HTA studies supported decisions on design engineering (various industrial and academic organizations), allocation decisions of research grants (e.g. Health Council, the Netherlands), and reimbursement decisions (e.g. IQWiG, Germany). She has presented her research at various international conferences in the social, technical and medical sciences. She has published her HTA studies involving biomedical engineers in diverse international peer-reviewed journals.

She has taught diverse courses in the early evaluation of technological innovations for Master students in Health Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, and Technical Medicine. Current courses:

  • Master course: Management of technology in health care (Industrial Engineering & Management, Health Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Technical Medicine)
  • Module coordinator High Tech Human Touch (Gezondheidswetenschappen)
  • Masterclass Scenario Analysis (Health Sciences)

  • Coordinator of the master track Health Care Technology Management (IE&M);
  • Curriculum committee Health Sciences

Board member of the HTA Division of the International Federation of Medical and Biological Engineering
