Research

Joyce is interested in research about the design and use of texts in professional contexts. She investigates which text characteristics affect comprehension and usability. She has done research about the effects of different information types in instructions for use and manuals, for example.

In collaboration with the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and together with Nienke van Norel, Joyce has conducted a study about health education for professionals who are low literate. They designed a brochure for landscape workers about tick bites and Lyme disease. (funded by NWO)

In her research about the design of documents that are used in professional contexts, Joyce uses Human Centered Design Methods. This means that potential users are involved in every stage of the design process.

Joyce is a member of the Center for eHealth Research and Disease Management. Within the EurSafety Health-net project, she participates in research about the design of a communication platform about infectious diseased to promote patient safety in the Euregio.

PhD supervision

Joyce was the assistant promotor of Nicole Loorbach, who succesfully defended her dissertation in 2013. The title of the dissertation is: Motivational elements in User Instructions.

Positions & Memberships

Internal:

  • Chair of the faculty council, Behavioural Sciences
  • Member of examination committee, Communication studies
  • Board Member of VIOT (Vereniging Interuniversitair Overleg Taalbeheersing)

International experience

In 2006, Joyce spent four months at the department of Technical Communication (now: department of Human Centered Design and Engineering), University of Washington, Seattle, USA. She participated in a research project about the structure of instructions on the Internet.

In 2000, Joyce spent four months at the department of Psychology, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. The research she did there is part of her dissertation.
