The department Cognitive Psychology and Ergonomics (CPE) performs research in Human Performance in using technical systems and the nature of the used human information processing capacities. We work from a cognitive (or information processing) perspective and cooperate with other scientific disciplines.

The surplus value of the CPE approach lies in the close entanglement of applied (problem solving) research and basic (information processing) oriented research. This entanglement (so-called ‘back-to-back research’) implies on the one hand that applied research leads to relevant fundamental research questions, and on the other hand that basic research provides knowledge that is essential for qualitatively excellent applied research. This entanglement is of special interest to discern this approach with the more technical approach of human-machine interaction at the faculties of EWI and CTW.
