Sjoerd de Vries’ expertise concerns Smart Media, more specific digital (smart) media in organizational communication such as 'smart marketing', e-business, Social CRM, digital provision of services, and reputation management.

A second area of expertise is networked knowledge, or the use of digital media for knowlege management and educational purposes. For example Communities of Practice, blended education, and virtuele research centra.
