Don is educated as a policy analyst at the University of Twente, and joined CHEPS after completing his dissertation on political and bureaucratic decision-making in 1988. He co-ordinates research on quality management policies, and is involved in the co-ordination of Ph.D. students. He is active in the team developing U-Multirank and supported the Review Committee that monitored performance contracts in the Netherlands.
His current research interests include: (a) institutional and systematic impacts of internal and external evaluation of quality (of education, research, and of institutions) in Europe, amongst other things focusing on the Bologna process, (b) quality and excellence in higher education, and (c) transparency tools (classifications and rankings).
Don takes part in CHEPS’s Training & Consultancy projects around the world, focusing on quality assurance and accreditation issues.
He sits on the Quality Assurance Council of Hong Kong, the Advisory Board of the ISS (International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University, in The Hague] and on the international scientific board of A3ES, the accreditation agency of Portugal, and held similar posts in Austria and Hungary, as well as in Studychoice123.nl, the Dutch student information website.
