23-Mar-20 21:39 h. Corona update TN/AP 3

Dear TN/AP student,

We hope that you are still in good health and not suffering too much from the measures taken in connection with COVID-19/ the Coronavirus.

The first week of distance learning is already over. We have seen that teachers as well as students have adapted very quickly to the new situation. Everywhere ideas about and new ways of working together and teaching are popping up. Of course, not everything will go smooth at once. We do not have all the answers yet, but thanks to your dedication, flexibility and commitment we hope to find solutions quickly. We are very grateful for your help and understanding!

Through this mail, we would like to give you an update on the topics below.

Timetables, deadlines and Canvas

We intend to run online lectures as planned in the schedule as much as possible. This way you know where you stand and teachers do not plan meetings and activities at the same time. We also want to leave deadlines and dates for tests as much as possible as they are. Of course, this exceptional situation can lead to changes; keep an eye on the Canvas site of the module/the course. If the situation itself causes you problems with deadlines and/or appointments can not be met, please consult your teacher or supervisor in good time.

We advise students working in (project) groups to keep each other well informed and also to discuss not only via messages, but also (virtually) face-to-face via online meeting applications, such as Skype, Bluejeans, Discord, Matrix, Meet.)

It has been decided that quartile 3 will not be extended; quartile 4 will start on 20 April. Please take this into account in your planning.

 Experiments, practicals and testing

Experiments and practicals are a challenge. The teachers involved are looking at how and whether the learning objectives can be achieved in a different way. This can mean that you are going to carry out a practicum using simulation software, that you are given certain data sets, that parts are postponed or even that a part is cancelled.

When it comes to testing, this also becomes a challenge. Assignments, reports, oral exams, etc. can simply continue, but written tests are a greater challenge. Solutions will be sought in the coming period. It may also be that there are deviations from the test schedules, in form and weighting of different parts. When taking written online tests, we will sometimes also appeal to your integrity and professionalism. As a TN/AP student, we consider your academic attitude to fit in perfectly with this.

 BSc, MSc assignments and internships

We also want to continue the bachelor and master assignments as much as possible. Of course, we understand that a lot of (experimental) research is not possible now. Therefore consult with your supervisor what the possibilities are. The same goes for the internship in the master. If you can't find a solution to this problem, make an appointment with Carlijn via the TNW study advisor planner.

If your internship cannot start yet due to the current situation, or if your internship has been interrupted, it is of course possible to start your final assignment earlier, so that you minimize your study delay as much as possible. Make sure that you keep Betty Folkers, internship coordinator of TNW, informed via StageTnw@utwente.nl.

 Binding study advice (BSA)

First-year students who are unable to meet the BSA criteria due to the Corona virus can receive a postponed binding study advice. This means that the decision will be postponed for a maximum of one year; in that year you will be given the opportunity to still meet the conditions for a positive BSA. If you have successfully completed a sufficient number of courses this year, you will of course receive a positive recommendation. More concrete information about the BSA will follow later. If you have any questions about your specific situation, make an appointment with Carlijn via the TNW study advisor planner.

 Quartile 4

We expect the measures to remain after 6 April. In the coming weeks we will be preparing the education in Quartile 4, which regularly starts on 20 April. We hope to be able to set it up in such a way that there will be no study delay.

 Internationalisation

Students who are currently abroad are urgently advised to return to the Netherlands. Of course, this is your own choice; we are available for consultation and will be happy to think along with you about tailor-made solutions to keep study delay to a minimum. However, we would like to ask the students concerned to clearly indicate what they are going to do. For internships this can be done via Betty Folkers StageTnw@utwente.nl and for graduation, minors etc. you can indicate this in Mobility online and via tn-tnw@utwente.nl.

Foreign students can find more information here.

 Deadlines

Enrolment period education quarter 4: 23 March to 19 April
The minor fair on 24 March has been cancelled due to the corona measures. Registration for a minor is possible from 25 March until 25 May.  The registration period for Learning to Teach is from 25 May to 15 April.

The registration deadline for another study has been postponed from 1 May to 1 June.

Thinking along

As said, we do not have an immediate answer for everything and online education will not run smoothly immediately. But we hope to be able to set up a good educational programme soon. We also really appreciate your input. Do you have ideas, suggestions and (creative) solutions? Then don't hesitate to share them with us. And also if you have any questions, if something is unclear or if you just want to fine-tune something, don't hesitate to contact one of us.

 Kind regards and stay healthy,

On behalf of the entire TN-AP team

16-Mar-20 12:26 h. 2. Corona update TN/AP: Our education continues

Dear AP/TN student,

We hope all of you are doing well. The current situation regarding corona is exceptional and is putting us all to the test. For now we want to inform you about the way we intend to organise our education for the upcoming weeks.

Our education continues!
The education will, as much as possible, continue, even before March 23. In contrast to the UT news update, we as AP/TN, want to start earlier with online education for several courses. It is our intention to limit study delay for you as much as possible. Our teachers and the programme staff work hard to start online education as soon as possible. But we may not have a replacement solution for all education, such as practicals.

Information in canvas per module/course
The first solutions for online education have already been offered and start immediately. You can find the information you need in the module(s) and courses you follow in Canvas. Your lecturers will inform you about alternative ways in which you can be guided, ask questions and follow education. It may mean that different types of online learning tools are used for different subjects. In addition, we are exploring different ways of assessment. That may imply that in some cases we will deviate from the original test schemes of modules and courses. We expect you understand this.

Solutions to prevent study delay
At this moment we are working on various solutions for example: moving exams/ colloquia and the progress of assignments/internships, but also for the rules such as BSA. We also realise that tailor-made solutions for (some) individual students will be inevitable. We will know more about that later and inform you then.

 What can you do?
We ask for your understanding about this situation and we want to emphasize the importance of following all (health) measures and directions. What you can do:

  • Stay at home. Like UT employees, students are asked to study at home. Try to use this study time at home in a useful and effective way.
  • Read your student mail regularly. Take note of all updates we send via e-mail and/or canvas.

We hope that you, like our dedicated teachers, remain involved in your education!

Contact with other students
Especially in this situation, it is important to stay in contact with your fellow students. However, avoid face-to-face contact! Maybe you would like to continue working on your project or you need a conversation with a fellow student. Then remember that there are several solutions for social contact: there is skype conversation, facetime, etc. And there are also online tools to work (safe) together.

 Questions and more information
Only if all of us work together, we, as academic community, can contribute to contain the spread of the virus and can continue our education. But we can also imagine your doubts and questions. In that case you can contact the study advisor or programme coordinator. Please use this email address: tn-tnw@utwente.nl.  We will do our best to answer all questions as soon as possible.

Take care of yourself!

Kind regards,

13-Mar-20 16:15 h. 1. Corona Virus measures and TN/AP

Dear TN/AP students,

The situation and measures concerning the spread of the Corona virus are developing very rapidly. Yesterday evening a close-down of all lectures and other face-to-face educational activities at NL universities until 31st March has been announced without any exception. Our current primary concern is with the courses and modules that are underway in the 3rd quartile and already planned colloquia. Measures and solutions are being considered at all levels within the UT.

Despite the complex situation, we continue the educational efforts as good as possible. Like the teachers have to adapt to the new work forms, we also expect you accept new approaches to learning. Unlike what media write, we are not stopping education and we expect this also from you. Due to the cancellation of contact education, educational form like practical, projects and examinations are not possible.

For now, the measures we take are;

  • right now we are looking for possibilities to realize distance education /online alternatives,
  • within the faculty TNW has been decided that all study associations will close their doors immediately,
  • stay at home, do not come to the UT to study. Avoid face to face contact as much as possible,
  • planned appointments with study advisors will be by Skype,
  • bachelor and master research project will continue in line with the local measures of the research group,
  • the bachelor's graduation ceremony of 27 March has been postponed until further notice.

For detailed information on the continuation of education on your courses we refer to the Canvas site of your module or course. This information not only includes alternative work forms, but might also include alternative assessments.

We can imagine that you have questions. We are currently working hard on solutions and answers. However, please be aware that the current situation may change on notice. Follow the UT news updates on the UT website and read our messages in the canvas courses. We keep you posted.

We hope you and your loved ones all stay healthy. We understand your concerns and are committed to finding the best solutions for you in this complicated situation.

If you have questions about your personal situation, contact your study adviser by e-mail, or make an appointment via the online planner: https://tnw.planner.utwente.nl; add your Skype name in the Telephone number box.

Take care of yourself!

Best regards,
