4TU.Alumni Event New York City

Alumni are invited to join a special gathering on Thursday, 4 December in New York, highlighting inspiring examples of innovation within the local 4TU community.

This 4TU Alumni event hosted at the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in New York puts a spotlight on two local alumni entrepreneurs:

Marleen Vogelaar (alumna TU/e) in a short talk shares her entrepreneurial journey across two continents — starting from co-founding her 2007 startup in the Netherlands all the way through the growth, successes, and challenges that followed. Today Shapeways is headquartered in New York, with factories and offices in Eindhoven, Queens, and Seattle.

Paulus Schoutsen (alumnus UT), founder of Home Assistant and a pioneer of open, privacy-respecting smart-home technology will be interviewed about his insights and lessons learned from building one of the world’s largest open-source platforms with nearly 2 million users.

In addition, brief updates will be given from both the Dutch Consulate and our four universities, followed by a networking borrel reception.

Registration is required. Please sign up via the link below to secure your place.

PROFILES

Marleen Vogelaar is the co-founder and current CEO of Shapeways, the pioneering digital-manufacturing company she helped launch in 2007 with the vision of democratizing on-demand production for creators and businesses alike. After the company filed for bankruptcy in mid-2024, she led a revival alongside a dedicated Eindhoven team, acquiring the brand and original production facility and steering the business back to operational stability and customer-centric growth.

With a strong foundation in strategy, operations and manufacturing, Marleen brings deep expertise to her leadership role. Her career journey includes consulting in M&A and strategy, as well as hands-on experience in quality and logistics management. She holds an M.Sc. in Industrial Engineering and Management Science from TU Eindhoven. Known for her energetic and positive approach, Marleen thrives at the intersection of technology, design and manufacturing—driving innovation while empowering teams to bring bold ideas to life.

Paulus Schoutsen, Nabu Casa - Z-Wave Alliance

Paulus Schoutsen is the founder of Home Assistant, the open-source smart-home platform he launched in 2013 to give users privacy, local control and freedom from big-tech ecosystems. In 2024, he also founded the Open Home Foundation, a Swiss non-profit that now safeguards Home Assistant and related projects, ensuring they remain independent and community-driven.

Under his leadership, Home Assistant has grown into a mainstream platform with an estimated two million users and broad compatibility across thousands of devices — standing alongside but distinctly apart from offerings by Apple, Amazon and Google. Originally from the Netherlands, Paulus studied Business Information Technology (BSc & MSc) at the University of Twente and now lives in a very smart home with his family in Brooklyn, New York.

All members of the UT community are invited - alumni, exchange students, current/old students, (former) staff members and postdocs.

Participants will have an opportunity to meet fellow alumni not only from Twente but also TU Delft, TU Eindhoven & Wageningen University. With over 1000 TU graduates living in the greater New York City region there will be a great cross selection of participants from different companies, sectors and roles – the closing reception/borrel will be organized to maximize networking opportunities.

This event is free for alumni from the Dutch Technical Universities but for logistical and security reasons, prior registration is required here.

About 4TU.Alumni

The 4TU.Alumni network of the University of Twente, TU Delft, TU Eindhoven and Wageningen University launched its first activities in the USA back in 2014 and has since grown to include communities in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Nordics, Spain and Switzerland.

4TU alumni work across a wide range of sectors, and are affiliated not only with the most prestigious organisations of their fields but also innovative new start-ups. Some may have only recently completed their studies in the Netherlands while others have work experience of over a decade or more. This network, therefore, represents a significant source of skills, contacts, and advice.
