On 10 November 2026, Quest, the Netherlands’ largest popular science brand, will put Dutch science in the spotlight. During the very first Quest Awards, the magazine will present prizes in the following categories: Scientist of the Year, Scientific Talent of the Year, Scientific Breakthrough of the Year and the public choice award: Research of the Year. UT colleague Sissi de Beer (S&T) has been nominated in this final category.
So, the UT needs your vote for Research of the Year: the new electronic nose.
New electronic nose
Sissi de Beer, University of Twente
Using AI, scientists have developed an electronic nose that can recognise different odours, detect smells faster than humans and locate the source of an odour. This enables the system to detect hazardous substances and explosives, or even locate survivors trapped under rubble after a disaster.
