GOALS

The overall objective of the Bachelor’s degree programme is to train students to become Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering.

A graduate of a Bachelor’s programme is an academically formed person who has been trained to work as a researcher or designer under the supervision of another person who already holds a Master’s or Bachelor’s title.

In practice, this entails a combination of several characteristics. Among others, the student with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering has an inquisitive mind, broad interests, shows initiative, thinks independently, can see the big picture, is capable of abstract thought, can distinguish between fundamental and ad hoc ideas, can justify generalizations and they can generate creative solutions for research and design problems.

As a graduate of the Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, you will be able to solve problems in the fi eld of Electrical Engineering relatively independently. You will have the ability to develop new knowledge and integrate this in your work. As a Bachelor’s student, you will be able to identify and structure problems. You must be able to separate essentials from side issues and draw up a timeline for resolving a problem. Furthermore, the Bachelor’s student of Electrical Engineering must be able to work in multidisciplinary teams.

Electrical Engineering is the study and application of Electricity, Electronics and Electromagnetism. The subfi elds covered are Analogue and Digital Electronics, Computer Engineering, Measurement and Control Engineering and Communications Engineering. In addition, the degree programme includes the requisite basic knowledge of Mathematics and Physics.

ATTAINMENT LEVELS

The general attainment targets for a graduate of a Bachelor’s programme offered by the Department of Electrical Engineering are summarized below by domain, working method and context.

Basic knowledge of mathematics

 1 is able to apply the knowledge of calculus to carry out differential and integral calculation, solve series of linear equations, and utilize probability and stochastic calculus in order to describe or model physical phenomena, components, signals and circuits.

Basic knowledge of physics

 2 is able to describe simple electromagnetic and mechanical situations and describe semiconductor components, as well as analyse and model the behaviour of physical systems and the relevant information acquisition systems.

Electronics

 3 is able to give a functional description and perform an analytic study of a simple analogue circuit and perform this functional study on circuits of increasing complexity using numerical methods and simulations.

Computer engineering

 4 is able to analyse and synthesize simple digital circuits and utilize a hardware description language to design complex circuits. The graduate is familiar with the computer organization and subsystems and is able to analyse and solve a problem algorithmically using a computer language.

Measurement and control engineering

 5 iis familiar with the functionality and structure of a measurement system, and is capable of identifying and analysing measurement errors, so as to be able to make deliberate use of measurement equipment when designing and testing circuits during assignments and projects.
 6 can analyse and design physical systems based on a control strategy, such as in electronic circuits and robotics applications.

Communications engineering

 7 is able to describe communications systems in terms of the media used, modulation methods, coding techniques and protocols in order assess the performance and quality of such a system.

{METHOD}

 8 is able to divide the principal function of an application into subsidiary functions based on well-founded arguments in order to draw up a functional design of the application.
 9 is able to complement the subsidiary functions of a functional design of an application with subsystems so as to facilitate the application (the sum of the subsystems), thereby taking into account the requirements and conditions of the assignment. To this end, the graduate is able to make a well-founded choice out of the available systems.
 10 is able to report orally and in writing on assignments and projects.
 11 is able to cooperate with team members and clients during assignments and projects.
 12 is able to analyse the terms of reference of assignments and projects, acquire the requisite information, draw up a research plan and/or design plan and schedule the implementation thereof.
 13 is able to acquire knowledge available in academic books and journals with and without the use of automated search systems.
