The education of the future, experience it with CreaTe 26 June - 2 July: CreaTe week

In the period from 26 June through to July, the Creative Technology (CreaTe) faculty at UT offers anyone interested the opportunity to get acquainted with the UT's characteristic project education. Two student exhibitions will take place in the DesignLab: ‘Have Fun & Play!’ and ‘Hybrid Worlds’. In addition, third-year CreaTe students will present their thesis projects in the SmartXp auditorium. Director of education Gerrit van der Hoeven: 'These activities provide a good picture of how CreaTe students “learn by doing” in practice, and how they search and research for ways that technology can be deployed to make users' lives healthier, easier and more fun.'

CreaTe students manage their learning process themselves and design and build an interactive design. With the arrival of such digital learning methods as MOOCs, teaching is no longer simply transferring knowledge, but especially involves providing a good context with sufficient opportunities for interaction in which students manage their learning process themselves.

26 June: ‘Hybrid Worlds’ exhibition

“Hybrid Worlds” is the last large group project in Creative Technology. Here, the in-depth majors “New Media” and “Smart Technology” are integrated into a project. The theme of the installations that will be built this year is “Physical Data Visualisation”. One example is a “world population tank”, and another is a visualisation of the number of bicyclists on campus. The installations can be viewed starting Friday 26 June at 11:00 in the DesignLab; the general public is welcome from 15:30 onwards for a drink.

1 July: Thesis presentations

The thesis project is the last large project for third year CreaTe students. The topics are proposed by commercial companies and health and research institutions, among others. So they are of a varied nature. The common thread for each thesis project is the use of existing technology in a creative and innovative way within an application domain determined beforehand. The CreaTe graduation colloquium will take place on 1 July. On this day, more than 40 CreaTe students will each give a 15-minute presentation in English. The presentations are subdivided among some 10 parallel morning sessions (9:00-12:15) and a plenary afternoon session including the student election of the thesis project with the biggest “coolness” factor (13:00-18:00). These thesis presentations will be held in the Smart Xp auditorium in the Zilverling building.

2 July: ‘Have Fun & Play!’ exhibition

Within the CreaTe discipline of ‘Have Fun & Play!’," close cooperation is held with the multimedia art festival GOGBOT. The best designs will be exhibited at the GOGBOT in September. This year, the discipline's theme is ‘the Internet of Things’. With this, all of the objects around us get an Internet connection - - such as the refrigerator, for example, that can order milk automatically when it's finished. This theme takes shape within the student installations in the form of a vintage living room in which all of the devices communicate: a virtual reality trip you can make in a fixer-upper car and Internet footsteps that always keep following you.
