Information about Roessingh

Roessingh Research and Development (RRD), the largest Dutch scientific research centre for rehabilitation technology, is an independent Research & Development organization linked to the Roessingh rehabilitation centre in Enschede. RRD is internationally recognized as a centre of excellence in the fields of rehabilitation technology and telemedicine.

In the Netherlands, patients are allowed to decide for themselves whether they want to see a physical therapist or general practitioner (huisarts) with physical complaints. In practice, a lot of people go the wrong healthcare professional when they have low back pain. A triage can be of help here. In a triage protocol, several questions are asked that (together) determine which healthcare professional should be visited. If a visit is necessary at all.

The University of Twente and Roessingh Research and development have created a website via which patients can complete this triage protocol. It is unclear, however, whether this website is usable, and how it fits into the information gathering and decision making process of patients when confronted with lower back pain.

The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the website usability and to determine the role it can play within the decision forming process of patients. Therefore, it is important to first map the information seeking process. Where do patients get their information from? How do they determine what is good and what is bad medical information? How does all this information result in a decision?

This implies:

Conducting a usability test of the triage website;

Conducting a survey or interview study on the gathering and interpretation of information when making the decision to visit a physical therapist or a general practitioner;

Participants are already available;

Writing a report with redesign advice for the website and an advice on how to position the website within the decision making process of a patient (i.e., how should patients be notified of this website? How should it align with other information sources, like thuisarts.nl).
