RESEARCH

Ralph Schielen has a position as assistant professor (guest researcher) for one day a week at Twente University. His main function is to act as an intermediary between the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management on one hand, and the University of Twente on the other hand. Subjects that are of importance for the Ministry can be studied in more detail by students or PhD candidates of the university. Also, interesting developments at the university will be noted in an early stage and may be of benefit for the Ministry. He will signal relevant developments

Ralph Schielen was involved the supervision Dr. A. Paarlberg, who studied the formation of dunes in rivers, and the consequences for roughness and hence water-level prediction. Dr. Paarlberg defended his PhD-thesis successfully on August 28, 2008.

He was also involved in the supervision of Ir. J. Janssen, who studies the integration of qualitative and quantitave model concepts. More precisely, she investigates how the match between models which describe long term river management problems, and their end-users can be improved by incorporating qualitative knowledge and uncertainty information. Mrs. Janssen defended her PhD-thesis on September 19, 2009.

Meanwhile, he supervised MsC-students (dealing with for instance building houses on piles in floodplains, and with design-rules for side channels in river restoration).

At the Ministry of Transport, he coordinates the morphological and hydraulic activities which are carried out in the National Program Space for the River (www.ruimtevoorderivier.nl). He is now shifting his interest towards long term evolution of the Dutch river area (long term discharges, connections with the Veerman-committee (www.deltacommissie.com) and dealing with multiple spatial claims on the floodplains).

He is also involved in several MOU’s of the Ministry, to propagate the ideas and working methods if the Ministry. Some of the activities are listed below:
