Effects of Land Use Changes on Spatial and Temporal Water Availability in Java, Indonesia
The role of land use change impacts on water availability in tropical catchments is poorly understood. Despite numerous studies have been carried out to assess the effects of for instance deforestation and reforestation on water yield, the results vary and some cases are contradictory. This study aims to assess the effects of land use changes on spatial and temporal water availability in tropical catchments in Java, Indonesia under varying climatic conditions. Four steps will be executed to achieve the objective. First, statistical analyses are done to attribute changes in spatial and temporal water availability to land use changes and varying climatic conditions within the study catchments. Second, a hydrological model is used to attribute changes in spatial and temporal water availability to land use and climate changes. Third, the calibrated model is used for different hypothetical land use patterns and climatic conditions to investigate the sensitivity of spatial and temporal water availability to different land use patterns under varying climatic conditions. Fourth, the calibrated model is used for realistic scenarios of future land use and climate change to simulate future spatial and temporal water availability in the study catchments. Results of this study will be useful for supporting the authorities for mitigating future water stress through appropriate land use management planning.
