PhD Candidate in the subproject Dune formation within the project NatureCoast: Nature-driven nourishment of coastal systems.

Recently a huge shore nourishment (21 Mm3) has been applied at the Delfland coast (NL) just south of The Hague in the shape of a peninsula, referred to as the Sandmotor. This unprecedented experiment aims to protect the hinterland from flooding by letting natural processes distribute sand over shoreface, beach and dunes, thus constituting a climate-robust and environmentally friendly way of coastal protection. The key objective of the NatureCoast program is to raise our understanding and predictive capability regarding the various aspects of this type of shore nourishments, up to a level enabling to assess their effectiveness and to export the underlying technology worldwide. The overall scientific challenge lies in understanding and predictive modelling of the complex interplay of eco-morphological, hydrological and societal processes that govern the evolution, effects, feasibility and acceptability of mega-nourishment. Hence this research program involves 12 research groups from different disciplines (program leader: M.J.F. Stive, TUD). Consult the website for more information about this program.

Within NatureCoast I am doing a PhD research to obtain more insight in the impact of mega-nourishments on the spatio-temporal variability in aeolian sediment supply toward the upper beach and dunes. The research comprises observations using remote-sensing techniques (Argus video cameras) as well as doing in-situ field measurements as a ground truth for video observations. The observations will be used as input for a modelling effort in order to get insight in the long-term aeolian transport rates from the beach toward the dune. This research is funded by National Technology Foundation STW.

Activities: Investigating dynamics of a Shoreward Propagating Accretionary Wave (SPAW), a small-scale nearshore morphological feature, using the software package Delft3D.

2010: Bachelor Thesis: Estimate yearly sediment transport rates for the Latrobe River. (Department of Primary Industries, Rutherglenn, Victoria, Australia).

Activities: Statistical analysis of sediment data using GUMLEAF software.

Feb 2012: Assistant for model simulations in a sand wave project (University of Twente).
