Short bio

Markus Pahlow holds a MSE degree in Civil Engineering from Ruhr-University Bochum, Bochum, Germany, a MSE and a PhD in Environmental Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA. Upon completion of his PhD in 2003 he joined the Environmental Technology Laboratory at NOAA in Boulder, USA. From 2004 to 2011 he was on the faculty of the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, in the institute of Hydrology, Water Resources Management and Environmental Engineering. He has carried out and coordinated a number of research projects in the areas of remote sensing, integrated water resources management, flood risk management, the development of decision support tools and renewable energy. Pahlow has taught a variety of subjects, including statistics, fluid mechanics, hydrology, water resources management, open channel hydraulics and geographic information systems. He also worked as consultant in water and wind energy related projects. At present Pahlow works at University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands, as postdoctoral researcher. His research focus lies on resource efficiency and reduction of impacts in agriculture, effect of land use, land cover and climate change on hydrology and water footprint sustainability assessment.
