Morphological feedback between dredging operations and sand wave dynamics
Waterways leading to large harbours in shallow seas are dredged regularly to maintain navigational depth. For an optimized dredging policy accurate estimates of seabed dynamics are required. In many locations off the coast of the Netherlands these waterways are located in areas that are covered by sand waves. This research investigates the morphological feedback between dredging operations and sand wave dynamics. Available data from seabed surveys is used to analyse this feedback and develop a method for determining the expected seabed dynamics. This method will be applied in a risk-based resurveying and dredging policy. My PhD research is part of a larger project called SMARTSEA.
