CURRENT RESEARCH

Dutch water policy is currently changing towards a risk based approach, which leads to a significant increase of safety levels expressed in recurrence times in areas where consequences of a flood are large (1:10,000 and higher). The traditional flood frequency method (based on extrapolation of historical records of only 110 years) yields large uncertainties in predicting design discharges corresponding to extremely large recurrence times. Therefore, the alternative method GRADE was developed. Validation must be performed to evaluate if GRADE is indeed capable of predicting design discharges for the Dutch river system with a smaller uncertainty interval than the traditional method. Reconstructions of historic floods will provide useful knowledge that can be used for this validation process. Therefore, Anouk will focus during her PhD-project on the parametrization and translation of hydraulic characteristics of the river and floodplains of the various historical years and use this as input for the hydraulic models to reconstruct past flood magnitudes.
