Research Projects
The ASPECT project
Funded by the programme INTERREG North-West Europe, aims to create a reliable, robust framework to predict friction increase with temperature and to develop a control system that can instantaneously correct the applied forces to account for the sensed friction increase.
Key Information
- EU funding: € 2.35 Million
- Total budget: € 4.74 Million
- Duration: 45 months [May 2016 – Feb 2020]
Expected results:
- numerical model to predict friction variation based on real process conditions;
- fully-automated forming demonstrators for Automotive and Consumer goods applications;
- joint demonstration facility, open for training and education;
- guidelines to improve the material, tool and lubricant design.

Simulation tool for damage development during hot forming of rings
As a unique and important member of the metal forming family, ring rolling provides a cost effective process route to manufacture seamless rings. Applications of ring rolling cover a wide range of products in aerospace, automotive and civil engineering industries. During this process, due to a complex temperature and deformation history, damage can occur in the material. The aim of this project is to develop a reliable and efficient simulation tool for the prediction of damage initiation and evolution in hot ring rolled products.
