Biomaterials oriented research within the chair Nonlinear Solid Mechanics considers the deformation and failure behaviour of biological tissues like bone, cartilage and soft tissues. Prominent properties of biological tissues compared to many engineering materials are strongly anisotropic structures, adaptation of cell structures to mechanical loads, inhomogeneous mechanical properties and strong individual variations.

Research in this group is linked to several chairs within the research institute MIRA, especially within the faculty Engineering Technology (Biomechanical Engineering and Skin Tribology).
