PDEng Project Title:

Design of a vortex chamber for spray drying of milk (based on CFD modelling)

PDEng Project Topic:

Design of a vortex chamber for spray drying of milk (based on CFD modelling) is a PDEng project funded by FrieslandCampina. This project is part of a larger research in which many other parties are involved, such as the Université Catholique de Louvain. The main goal of this research is to develop a new type of spray dryer based on the vortex chamber technology.

The basic principle of such a technology is to operate under a stronger acceleration than the earth gravity (as done in conventional fluidized beds); this is known as the high-G acceleration. There are several ways to generate high-G accelerations, i.e. from the inertia of the rotational motion of a particle bed. For that purpose, the drying agent is injected tangentially in the drying chamber from several gas inlet slots which creates a rotational motion of the particle bed.

The present PDEng project focuses on studying the effects of the momentum of the milk droplets on the vortex chamber design using CFD modelling.
