Coastal engineers, coastal zone managers and coastal zone scientists involved in, for example, the short-term and long-term development of the coastline, the impact of of rising sea level, the planning and design of sand nourishment schemes, sea harbours, coastal defence measures and conservation policies for the coastal environment, all require well-founded and well-validated tools for predicting sand transport under waves and currents. The semi-empirical sediment transport formula for sheet-flow conditions, resulting form the SANTOSS research, can be easily used by coastal practitioners and implemented in coastal morphology models.

The new formula will be based on the best possible dataset of large-scale experimental data and on the combined understanding of the Dutch and UK researches. Therefore it is expected to be widely and rapidly accepted by the coastal research/ engineering community in both countries as well as elsewhere in the world.

Besides the transport formula, the research will produce an assessment of existing sophisticated, process-based numerical models of sheet-flow transport and a new model will be developed based on the outcomes of the assessment and on the new research. This work will be valuable to those involved in developing and using predictive methods for sand transport under waves and currents.
