Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands (5-year curriculum):

·

Master study in the Computational Mechanics Department, followed graduate courses in (fluid) mechanics, materials science and applied physics.

·

Traineeship: study of a non-linear dynamic system with dry (Coulomb) friction.

·

Graduation project: stability analysis of a non-linear hydrodynamic journal-bearing system using the Hopf bifurcation theory. Developed software was later incorporated in DIANA software code (STRDYN module), and the study is published in an international refereed journal.

September 1986 - January 1992, Akzo Nobel Central Research, Arnhem, The Netherlands

Position: Research engineer and project leader in Department of Mechanical Engineering. Involved in development of production processes for plastic products. Projects:

·

As chief engineer involved in product development and modelling of plastic compact heat exchangers and condensers. This Akzo Nobel-product was developed for heat recovery from and decontamination of flue gases, and was in 1989 awarded with the Dow Chemical Energy Price. Coordinated the testing with a real-scale heat exchanger set-up, constructed and operated at Eindhoven University of Technology. Research on heat transfer and two-phase flow led to a doctoral thesis.

·

Involved in development of plastic processing equipment: filters, mixers and extruders. Modelling of non-Newtonian liquid flow in stacked-disc filters. Comparison of theoretical and laboratory results with industrial filters used for the filtration of liquid polymer (solutions).

·

Implementation of LIST thermal mixer in a pilot machine for fibre spinning. Testing in supplier's laboratory, purchasing, installation and testing of innovative thermal mixer, which is now used in the full-scale production of fibres.

·

Project leader of the staff group for extruder development. With the help of laboratory experiments and scale-up rules production machines were designed and their output optimized.

Main research interests:

Treatment of contaminated soils and dredging sludge with the help of air/steam and cement/lime/gypsum.

·

Sustainable building (energy, water, materials).

·

Hardening of (blended) cement/lime/gypsum (microstructure and pore water) and cementitious by-products (slag, fly ash etc.), and their fire response.

·

Transport properties and durability of cement/lime/gypsum based materials (e.g. Cl- and CO2 diffusion and rebar corrosion in concrete).

·

Mix design and concrete/mortar rheology (Self-Compacting Concrete, soil grouting, earth moist concrete, fiber reinforced concrete).

Has established a laboratory for cement/lime/gypsum based products (concrete, immobilisates, plasterboard etc), with financial support from industry.

The project: “Hydration of blended cements” was co-sponsored by the Dr. ir. Cornelis Lely Foundation (Dr. W. Chen).

As from the start of 2005 involved in the 4-year Integrated Project for SMEs (EU 6th FP): “Re-engineering of natural stone production chain through knowledge-based processes, eco-innovation and new organizational paradigms” (Acronym: I-STONE). The group focuses on the cement-based developments and applications within this project: “Development of High-Tech Concrete containing Natural Stone” (Dipl.-Ing. M. Hunger). A related project “Innovative concrete production” focuses on earth-moist concrete (Dipl.-Ing. G. Hüsken). Concretes with efficient binder use and with additional functionalities (self-cleaning ability, NO degradation ability, enhanced heat buffering etc) are developed and modeled.

From the fall of 2005 involved in the EOS Project “Exergy analysis of built environment”, sponsored by the user group and by SenterNovem (EOS program). This Lowex program is jointly executed with Technical Universities of Eindhoven en Delft, the UT group focuses on the financial yield of exergetic measures and the use of passive solar energy (ir. A.G. Entrop).

In January 2007 a second 4-year Integrated Project for SMEs (EU 6th FP) has started: The intelligent safe & secure built concept (Acronym: I-SSB). Two PhDs are working on the microstructure modeling and the technical development of gypsum/cement plasterboards with increased fire safety, nano-particles, impact-resistance, sensors, DeNOx and self-cleaning ability etc. (ir. A.C.J. de Korte and Q.L. Yu M.Sc.).

As of April 2008 a post-doc (Dr. M. Ballari) has started a 2-year project concerning the full-scale demonstration of 500 m2 air-purifying (DeNOx) stones in a street in Hengelo. This project is sponsored by the province of Overijssel, and executed jointly with Struyk Verwo (CRH group) and the city of Hengelo.

In August 2008 a PhD project on durable/sustainable concrete structures (P. Spiesz M.Sc.) has commenced, and in September a PhD study has started on transport phenomena in concrete and immobilisates (M.V.A. Marinescu M.Sc.). These projects are sponsored by the dr. ir. Cornelis Lely Foundation and the above user/sponsor group.
