Research

The asphalt paving process depends heavily on craftsmanship, the work is generally carried out without (high-tech) instruments to monitor key process parameters and little research effort is put into the systematic analysis and mapping of the asphalt construction process. This results in long learning cycles and makes it difficult to intervene in the process. Operations outside the domain of the experience of the asphalt team make the results of the paving process uncertain with some degree of variability. To reduce this uncertainty and variability there is a need to professionalise the paving process.

The aim of this research is to design and steer the paving process based on empirical knowledge. The goals are: Firstly to show the effects of operational choices during asphalt construction on the (mechanical) properties of the asphalt pavement and secondly to develop necessary intervention strategies.

The research follows an action research strategy, alternating steps of studying process choices and determining the corresponding consequences in the laboratory and in practice. To study the process choices feedback sessions with asphalt teams will be conducted and explicit mapped projects will be analyzed. To determine the consequences in the laboratory different process choices will be simulated and to determine the consequences in practice the PQi-approach (process quality improvement) developed by ASPARi will be used.

The expected results of this research will be methods, procedures and information to assist with the design of operational strategies for the asphalt construction process, i.e. studying the effects of different operational choices and intervention strategies on the process.

Examples of topics within the scope of this research are:

Simulation of roller regimes in the laboratory;

Compaction regimes for warm-asphalt mixtures;

Compaction regimes of (longitudinal) joints;

Compaction regimes for special weather conditions.
