Current research projects

Designing a quality label for insulation services for existing buildings

(research budget k€ 65, Nautic Groep BV)

The aim of this PDEng project is to design the guidelines for insulation services for existing buildings, of which a quality label consists. The project will focus on cavity wall, ground and floor insulation and will target companies and their processes.

3TU Lighthouse Research Project “Throw in the i-Drone”

(research budget k€ 50, 3TU Built Environment Center of Excellence)

The 3TU Built Environment Center of Excellence facilitates our research on the use of drones equipped with an infrared camera in the construction industry. Experiments were conducted to find out what possibilities these drones can offer and how efficiently and effectively data can be collected.

3TU Lighthouse Research Project “Impenetrable infiltration”

(research budget k€ 50, 3TU Built Environment Center of Excellence)

The 3TU Built Environment Center of Excellence facilitates our research to improve the understanding of the air tightness of buildings by assessing the variables that have an impact on the infiltration rate of a building. A better understanding in the air tightness of buildings helps us to specify how to reduce the energy use of existing buildings and the design of new buildings without reducing comfort. Effectiveness policy instruments to reduce energy use in privately owned houses

(research budget k€ 43, Provincie Overijssel)

The Province of Overijssel tries to stimulate the adoption of Energy Techniques and Measures (ETMs) by house owners via multiple policy instruments. Many of these instruments request quite some effort from the province and municipalities. They wondered what policy instruments will be most effective, given the scenario that the government wants to decrease her influence on the ETM-market without losing momentum in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.

Effects of PCMs in concrete on the energy use of buildings

(AgentschapNL)

Phase Change Materials (PCM) offer the possibility to store latent heat at a specified temperature, like a battery stores electric energy of a certain voltage. By applying these PCMs in buildings one can store heat to lower peak temperatures and one can use this heat for time periods that the surrounding temperature decreases. By this way indoor temperatures can be better balanced during conventional day-night cycles, in which an overload of heat exists during the day and a shortage of heat can be expected during the evening. Four boxes have been developed in which concrete slabs with and without PCMs were monitored for multiple seasons.

The adoption process of energy measures in the built environment

(AgentschapNL)

The government has arranged multiple incentives to stimulate the implementation of Energy Techniques and Measures (ETMs) in the built environment. These ETMs lower the energy use, make use of renewable sources or make use of fossil fuels in a more efficient way. Although the urge is high and the number of available ETMs is large, the rate of implementation is rather low. At the department of CME, research is conducted to gain more insights on how the implementation process of these ETMs takes place and can be improved in such a way that national ambitions can be met.

The profit of exergy in the built environment

(AgentschapNL)

Exergy is a concept used in thermodynamics to express the maximum amount of mechanical work that can be obtained from an energy flow or a change of a system in relation to its environment. In contrast to energy, exergy can be destroyed and by that means exergy can express the finiteness of resources better than energy can. The aim of the research on the profit of exergy in the built environment is to gain insights on the potential added value of exergy by linking this thermodynamic concept to building processes in which investment appraisal takes place based on conventional energy prices.

9. The project “Koning Citroen komt iets aan het water doen” competed in the “Greenest Idea of Borne 2016”. Julieta Matos Castano and I won the first price enabling us to bring the issue of sustainable water use to the primary schools in Borne.

8. Prof. dr. ir. J.I.M. Halman and I supervised student Robert van Lith during his master research project. He was nominated for Thesis Award of the Master Civil Engineering & Management 2016 on basis of his master thesis.

7. Nominated for the “Teacher of the Year 2016” award by Civil Engineering study association ConcepT of the University of Twente.

6. Supervisor of the design project for a new Natuurhus Almelo of student Casper Conradi. Within the biennial competition of Dutch and Belgium Science Shops, this project received the third price for 2013-2014.

5. Prof. dr. ir. J.I.M. Halman and I supervised student Jasper Konijnenberg during his master research project. He was nominated for the Lean Construction Netwerk Nederland (LCN-NL) Student Award 2014 on basis of his master thesis.

4. Being a supervisor of the bachelor research project of Jitta Meijer, I recommended her good work for the KIVI-Niria Oost/UT price 2009. She was nominated for the price, but unfortunately she did not become a finalist.

3. Supervisor of a student team consisting of Herman van der Bent and Jeroen van der Meeren, who joined the “Made in Overijssel” innovation contest 2009 with an innovative solution to save energy in social housing. They made it to the finals.
