“Improving driver behaviour in micro-simulation models, with a new gap-acceptance model”

I will conduct my master thesis project at the SWOV Institute for Road Safety research in Leidschendam. The aim of my research is to improve driver behaviour in microscopic simulation models by means of developing a realistic gap-acceptance model on intersections, so estimating traffic safety effects with microscopic simulation models is improved.


One aspect of driver behaviour and movements on intersections in microsimulation models will be more sophisticated with a more detailed gap-acceptance model. This more detailed driver behaviour improves the use of indicators of traffic conflicts obtained from microsimulation models. With this improvement the indicators of traffic conflicts can be used as a measure of traffic safety effects. That makes it possible to do research on the traffic safety effects of new advanced driver assistance systems(ADAS) like intersection warning systems.

Research approach

The gap-acceptance model will be developed for a left turn manoeuvre from the minor road on a priority T-intersection. Only passenger cars will be included.

First a choice is made on which variables to include in the model based on previous research, experts and own interest. A conceptual framework will developed from the chosen variables. This framework will be quantified and translated in a functional design that can be implemented in the simulation environment MARS developed by TNO. The implementation will be tested and the new gap-acceptance will be compared with the current simple gap-acceptance model.
