Work information:

Jan A.G.M. van Dijk is professor of communication science (in the domain of The Sociology of the Information Society) at the University of Twente, the Netherlands since 2000. He is chair of the Department of Media, Communication and Organization. Finally, he is scientific director of the Centre for E-Government Studies. Formerly he was assistant professor of methodology and statistics at Utrecht University, Faculty of Social Sciences (1980-1995) and associate professor and director of the Department of Media and Communion at the same Faculty (1995-2000). His PhD. thesis was defended at the University of Nijmegen (Radboud) in 1984.

Expertise:

Supervises all PhD. projects in the Centre for E-government Studies.

·

Has a 20-year experience in projects and applications of E-government and E-democracy, both nationally and internationally (the European Union).

Engages with the theory of E-government, E-democracy and E-participation.

·

First research focuses on access to and usage of online government applications. Expert on the digital divide and digital skills.

·

Second research focus is on the perspective of network government in government departments working with ICTs that have to cooperate in common projects. This is derived from his network theory and analysis in The Network Society (1991/2006).

Research projects:

Jan’s actual research projects are measuring digital skills (with A. van Deursen), Kanalen in Balans (Channels in the Balance) project: multichannel-management in public services, B-dossier (segmentation and personalization in public services) and EU tender project Social Inpact of ICT: Work Packages of 1. Writing the Conceptual Framework and 2. Domain report about Participation in Policy making (E-participation).
