Track 3: Converging technologies and risks

Chairs: SABINE ROESER and SVEN OVE HANSSON

Converging technologies such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and cognitive science introduce new opportunities, challenges and risks. This track of the SPT-conference focuses on converging technologies and risk. We would like to invite contributions on for example the following questions:

·

What are the risks of converging technologies?

·

Can we use concepts and methodologies from assessing risks of more conventional technologies and apply them to converging technologies?

·

Can we use the same methodologies for the ethical appraisal of converging technologies that we use for conventional technologies?

·

What are the ethical implications of risks associated with converging technologies?

·

What could the role of the precautionary principle be in dealing with converging technologies?

·

What role should the public play in assessing the acceptability of the risks of converging technologies?

·

What role should emotions play in assessing the acceptability of the risks of converging technologies?
